The School in Bömighausen Teachers´Salaries

In the year 1854 a budget is made according to a fixed plan for the school of Bömighausen. This trial points out that even the normal financial calculation of 100 „Reichsthalers" can´t be reached. The sum of 80 „Reichsthalern" is planned.
The word „nothing" is added to 30 positions, for example teacher´s flat, garden, harvest income, etc. This points out the teachers´ unsufficient income. Here is an account:
Estimate of the school employment in Bömighausen, made in August 1854 by teacher Emde. Number of inhabitants: 146, normal budget 100 Reichsthalers. Teacher´s income from the District School Budget: 60 Rth. School fee paid by parents of 20 school children: 20 Sgr all in all:13,10 Sgr. 1 ¼ Morgen land per Morgen 160 Ruthen:1,10.
The teacher does not get any firewood from the school employment, and he hasn´t got a wood of his own. Different school wood: Each child brings 2 „Splitten" daily, but those are needed to heat the classroom. Other privileges: The teacher owns one cow and a pig. Herding by a herd is free. The herd would have got 18 Sgr.if the teacher had to pay him.
Giving the Holy Last Supper to a sick person at his / her home the teacher gets 1 Sgr 8Pf. When an adult person dies the teacher is given 9 Sgr. 2Pf. A child 3 Sgr. 9 Pf. Calculated average (2 ad., 1child: 22,1) Two „Umgänge"(= 20 +20) of bread are given, 1for Michaelmas, the other one for Candlemas. According to school law, article 107, those loafs of bread are worth 5 Sgr.,40 ones 6,20.
18 eggs for easter: Sa. 13,3. So the income is 83,5 Reichstaler at last.

Wages
In former times teachers were payed by the community. Ground belonging to the school which could be used agriculturely were seen as additional allowance. It is uncertain, whether or not this was usual in Bömighausen, there are no scripts about it, and there are no documents that tell us whether or not there were such resources in connection with the old school which burnt down in 1875.
Reading, writing and calculating were the lessons which were mostly taught. The boys went to school for eight, and the girls for seven years.
From the community records of 1862-1968 one can learn something about the height of wages the teachers got. Thus, a remark written on May 10th, 1875 tells, that a teacher named Grebe from Neerdar among others is responsible for the school in Bömighausen, and he asks for an amount. The community agrees to pay him 16 Ths. more, so his salary is 100 Ths. per year. Appearently this amount is given as a tax just for the teacher replacement.
Another record, written on Dec.30th, 1875, tells about a decree of the School Faculty in Kassel that the salary is sentenced on 600 Marks for the school location in Bömighausen.

But the Community Council decides not to pay the full salary, because they do not have a teacher of their own.
On Apr. 24th,1897 teacher Theesfeld demands an amount of 100 Marks. The community is willing to pay 800 Marks from Apr.1st, 1897, inclusively the school garden and 90 Marks for fire wood.
On Oct. 22nd, 1902 the community council deals with the delivery of eggs for the teacher. According to the record the council is not able to deliver, because there are not any informations about the time of delivering and the number of eggs. However, it is told that in the beginning of the 60s the teacher had got eggs, but he had to collect them himself. The council decided to go on with this tradition.

On Apr.1st,1904 the community council promises teacher Albus (his wife is a born Potthof ) additional money of 100 Marks per year. However, this money may be revocated at any time. In case Mr. Albus might get an assistant, the 100 Marks would not be payed. This increase of salary is valid from Apr.1st,1904 (easter)
The last registration about teacher´s salary was done on March 3rd, 1919. It deals with an amount of the costs for a more than 32 lessons replacement, from 1 to 2,50 Marks. The council refused, and so the proverb about the „poor little village schoolmaster" came true in those days, when the teachers were paid really bad.

The salary of the" teachers at different school places", adapted from Curtze „Geschichte und Beschreibung des Fürstenthums Waldeck" S. 349 (= „History and Description of the Principality of Waldeck") about 1740 was in:
