The Graveyard

The Craveyard

The dead of the village very likely were buried in St. Pankratius´ graveyard in Neerdar in early years. No one knows when Bömighausen got a graveyard of its own. When I was a child, the graveyard was surrounded by a hedge, and people were able to get there through a small lane from Alleringhausen Street. The monument, being fenced in, stood by the edge, today church place), and you could walk through a narrow gate towards Friederike Emden (Aunt Friederike)

In those days the graveyard had three grave areals. One part leading to the road was situated deeper than the others and was bordered by a slope.

My friends and I often went to the graveyard without any fear.Years ago the yard was made larger including some parts of Aunt Friederike´s parcel and the school garden.

Below an old weeping willow some tombstones were erected in half a circle during a village contest.

On Wednesday, April 4th people could read an article dealing with Heinrich Behle´s (Müllers) 70 th birthday, with the remarkable headline “ His ancestor lived for 122 years”. As it was written on his tombstone this ancestor was born in 1724 in Bömighausen. He died there in 1846. Even in the so-called “good old times” it must have been unusual, but an additional inscription makes certain that this specification of age was true.

Of course growing old in beautiful Bömighausen is possible, however this declaration must be denied, because it has its origin in a reading mistake.

Instead of 1724 the date has to be read as 1794. The last line of the inscription makes us know:“His age was 52 years.” There are three reasons to prove this:

  1. Investigation by a historican.

  2. This remarkable declaration would have been manifested in literature.

  3. The registration in the church book: 52 years, 4 months and 18 days.

Unfortunately the community of Willingen cut off the weeping willow, although it was a kind of landmark. Those oldest tombstones also were taken away. Many people being fond of nature and culture did regret that action.

Here are the inscriptions which I wrote down years ago:

HIER RUHET SANFT IN GOTT MARIE MARGRETE BEHLINN MULLERINN

(Here softly rests in God MARIE MARGRETE BEHLINN MULLERINN)

GEBOREN 1789 GESTORBEN AM 24TEN NOVEMBER 1850 (1789 – Nov. 24th, 1850)

( Here softly rests MiLLER JOHANN HENRICH BEHLE(n), born 1724, died Sept.20th,1846,his age was 52 years, his date of birth was not 1724 but 1794)
